Here's a little document I made for myself a couple of months ago because I kept getting confused about the different conventions of how pixels are counted, centred etc. and how images relate to matrices. Thanks Sarah. This starts a long debate on zero versus one versus 0.5 indexing* :-) It's definitely a pain that the default for R is different to, e.g. DS9, but neither is obviously wrong...
(* The correct answer is, of course, 1 index for discrete indices, 0.5 index for continuous - the exception being lifts where any sane person G/0 indexes for the ground floor).
